CHAPTER twenty-three

The light of dawn filtered through the tent opening. Maria’s eyes felt crusty and her body ached. She had spent most of the night crying while lying in the Vukasin equivalent of a sleeping bag on the ground, which was an amazing piece of camping equipment. It stretched and conformed to the person that crawled into it and could keep a body warm or cool, depending upon the ambient temperature at the time. When empty it was only about the size of a back pack. Her only real complaint was it didn’t provide any cushion against the hard ground.

She didn’t even have Banji to curl up to. He had checked on her a few times, but when she refused to talk to him, he gave her space. She had acted like a bitch and she knew it. It just seemed that Vukas was taking over and taking away her choices. She already agonized over whether or not she should stay with Banji or try to go back to Earth.

It’s true she was falling in love with Banji, but she still had doubts. Now she was connected to him in a way that was more intimate than sex. Frankly, it scared the hell out of her. So she did what she normally did when she was scared; she got angry.

Maria rolled over, tucking one arm under her head. She listened in on Banji’s thoughts most of the night. He wasn’t upset at her. He was worried about her and blamed himself for her outburst. She had gathered that the love bite that he had given her was most likely the cause of this somehow. Banji had berated himself for hours about losing control and how an honorable man would have made sure that it had been Maria’s choice.

Maria kind of liked the fact that Banji wanted her so much that he lost control. It amazed her that through the night he never once became angry or blamed her. Banji was unlike any man she had ever met. She could see the capacity for violence in his mind, but it was surrounded by a wall of honorable intentions. No one would ever be able to convince Banji to go against his convictions of what was right. But he wasn’t blindly loyal; he questioned everything and made his own decisions from there. He loved fiercely and didn’t give his loyalty lightly.

But the most surprising part of Banji was that despite his confident, easygoing demeanor, he was, at his heart, an insecure little boy craving love. Maria began to understand the damage that the lack of women and the subsequent decisions to try to preserve their race had wrought. If a man like Banji didn’t feel worthy of love, it meant something fundamental had been broken.

That was Maria’s epiphany. Banji needed her. He needed her to show him that he was worthy of being loved. She knew that he loved her, even if he hadn’t said the words aloud. Whenever he had looked at her or thought about her, wonder had filled his mind.
